Careers

Two tracks. Both of them are hard.

Royal Mortgage is a licensed lender that writes its own software. That makes it an unusual place to originate loans and an unusual place to write code, and both of those cut in the direction you would expect. Here is the honest version of each.

01 · The case, and the counter-case

Small company, real regulatory surface, founder who ships.

Why people come

  • The software and the license are under the same roof. Nobody here is guessing what the other side needs.
  • The distance between an idea and it being live is measured in days.
  • The work matters in a way that is embarrassingly easy to explain at dinner. It decides whether a family gets a house.
  • You will be in rooms with counterparties, capital and regulators far earlier than you would be anywhere larger.

Why people should think twice

  • Small team. There is no layer above you to catch a dropped ball.
  • Regulated. Some things move slowly on purpose and you have to be able to live with that.
  • Opinionated house. There are ruled documents that outrank your preference, and they are not up for relitigation every quarter.
  • The founder is in the code and in the copy. If you need a lot of autonomy over direction, this is not that job yet.

We combine people and AI working in harmony. Humans check off on everything.

Hiring NMLS license required

Originate at a lender where the application takes itself. What is left on your desk is the part you were actually good at.

What changes

  • You stop typing applications. The intake runs the interview, in the right order, and produces a structured file. You are not transcribing a phone call into a form at nine at night.
  • You stop chasing paystubs by hand. Documents are requested, received and read by the platform, hardest condition first. You get told what is genuinely stuck.
  • You stop guessing where a file is. The record shows exactly which question a borrower stopped on, which is a different job from wondering why they went quiet.
  • Your first conversation is different. You are often meeting a borrower who already has a structured file and a real credit picture, rather than a stranger with a question.

What does not change, and never will

  • The judgment is yours. Structure, strategy, the exception, the thing that does not fit a box. Software is bad at all of it and honest about that.
  • The relationship is yours. Agents, builders, past clients, referral sources. Nothing in this platform is trying to own those.
  • The hard conversation is yours. When the answer is no, or smaller, or later, a person says that to a person.
  • The signature is human. An underwriter reviews and signs every decision here. You are part of a chain that ends with a name on it, not a model output.

What we are looking for

  • An active NMLS license, or the willingness and eligibility to get one
  • Real origination experience, and the scar tissue that comes with it
  • Somebody who reads a file and sees the structure, not just the approval
  • Comfort working alongside software that is genuinely fast, including on the days it makes you look slow
  • A source of business you actually own, or a serious plan to build one

What we are not looking for

  • Volume at any cost. The underwriter signs everything, and that is not negotiable for anyone's month.
  • Anyone who wants the AI turned off for their files. It is the company.
  • Anyone who needs a rate advantage to win. That is not the argument we are making.

The terms

Compensation, splits and territory are discussed directly rather than posted, because they depend on the license you hold and the business you bring. The licence you hold and the states it covers matter more than where you sit, and the current list is always the one at nmlsconsumeraccess.org.

Engineering

Hiring Product-minded generalists

Build a lender, not a landing page. The software here is the company, not a channel for it.

What you would actually work on

  • The intake. The conversation layer, the branch logic, the record it produces. This is the product and it is where the hardest problems are.
  • The document machine. Requesting, receiving and reading documentation, then reconciling it against what the interview recorded. Agentic work with a real correctness bar.
  • The record and how it is protected. Securing the conversation data is treated as the largest engineering commitment in the company, not a ticket.
  • The surfaces. Eight sites on one design system, all served from our own origin with no build step in front of them.

How we build

  • No build step in the front end. What is in the repository is what the browser runs. Readable, auditable, and it cannot rot behind a toolchain.
  • No third-party CDN in front of a borrower. Fonts, marks and scripts come from our origin. One fewer party between somebody and their mortgage.
  • Nothing user-supplied is ever written as HTML. Every mark is built from real nodes. A borrower can type anything into the interview and it stays text.
  • Copy is governed like code. What the assistant says lives in ruled documents that outrank the implementation. Changing a line is a decision, not a commit.
  • Accessibility up front. Forty-four pixel targets, visible focus on navy, reduced motion honored, live regions that behave.
  • Boring infrastructure. The interesting risk in this company is regulatory and it is in the data. It is not in the hosting.

What we are looking for

  • Somebody who can hold product, copy and code in their head at once
  • Deep comfort with plain JavaScript, the platform APIs and the browser itself
  • Judgment about when a dependency earns its place, which is rarely
  • Real care about the person on the other side of the screen, who is frightened about money
  • The temperament to work inside constraints that exist for legal reasons rather than arguing with them

What we are not looking for

  • Framework maximalism. A rewrite is not a plan.
  • Anyone who wants to ship an autonomous decision. That line is not moving.
  • Anyone who needs a spec handed to them. The spec is usually a conversation with the founder and a ruled document.

Where

Home office is Jacksonville, Florida. Working arrangements are discussed with the role rather than posted, because the answer differs between somebody sitting with the underwriting team and somebody working on the record layer.

02 · How hiring runs

Four steps, and we tell you where you are after each one.

A company whose whole argument is that people should not be left wondering where they stand would look ridiculous running a hiring process that does exactly that.

The process
  1. You write to usA note, not a portal. What you have done and what you want to do next.
  2. A conversationThirty minutes with the founder. Both directions, and you should arrive with questions.
  3. The real thingFor originators, walk a live file. For engineers, work through something we are actually stuck on. Paid if it takes real time.
  4. The offer, or a straight noWith the reason. Nobody is left on read.
What we will not do
  • Ghost you. If it is a no, you get a no.
  • Run a six-round loop for a company this size
  • Ask for free work of any real length without paying for it
  • Pretend the job is something it is not to get a yes

03 · Apply

Write to a person.

There is no applicant tracking system here and there is not going to be one until there has to be. Pick your track and the note opens addressed and titled.

Loan officer track

Tell us where you are licensed, roughly what you have originated, where your business comes from, and what you want the next two years to look like.

Engineering track

Send something you built rather than a list of technologies. Tell us what was hard about it and what you would do differently now.

Both buttons open your own mail client with the note already addressed and titled. Nothing is submitted from this page and this page has no form on it. If your machine does not open mail from a link, write to bryan@royalmtg.com directly and put the track in the subject line.

Ask it

Questions about the job, before you write.
